Root canals were once a dreaded procedure that many patients assumed would be painful and lengthy. But today, thanks to advances in dental technology, root canals are painless and can be done in one or two short procedures without disrupting the patient’s life. At Implant and Cosmetic Dental Care, PLLC, we perform Maspeth root canal procedures along with cosmetic dental care and tooth restorations. Our cosmetic dental care includes veneers, dentures, teeth whitening, fillings and root canal restorations to help save teeth from extraction.
When a tooth is developing, the pulp, the soft inner tissue, is important. It protects the inside of the tooth and nourishes the tissues around it. When the tooth is fully mature, it can survive without the pulp as the tooth stays nourished. The pulp, surrounded by something called dentin, is normally protected by the dentin. The dentin in turn is protected by a layer of enamel above the gumline. If there is a crack or break in the tooth, it can destroy the protective layers. Our Maspeth root canal can help save the tooth so that it does not need extraction. If the pulp is exposed to bacteria, it can become inflamed and painful, infected the tooth and causing an abscess. Abscesses can be dangerous if they are not treated in a timely fashion.
Pulp can also become damaged through periodontal diseases such as gingivitis. In a Maspeth root canal procedure, the diseased pulp inside the tooth is first removed before cleaning out the area and sealing the tooth in a procedure called endodontic therapy, or a root canal procedure. A crown is placed over the tooth to protect it and it returns to a healthier state again. Root canals have a very high success rate and are successful in most patients who have the procedure.
